we can make a difference

When you think crisis think children

...222 million children are threatened by armed conflicts, displacement and climate change… We develop scientific methods to estimate the magnitude of polycrisis effects on children.

…1 in 6 children are living 50m of an active war zone… We scale evidence-based family strengthening program to prevent continued violence.

...Globally, more than 10.5 million children experienced the loss of a caregiver during the COVID-19 pandemic… We advocate for programs and policies resulting in sustainable impact for affected populations.

Our work

The Global Reference Group for Children Affected by Crisis is a small interdisciplinary network of global experts who came together during COVID-19 to produce global estimates of pandemic-related orphanhood and link these estimates to a unified strategy for evidence-based action. Now, given the escalating compound crises threatening the wellbeing of children globally, the Global Reference Group for Children Affected by Crisis aims to link science to evidence-based action and advocacy across polycrises of contagion, conflict, and climate.

We exist to support essential organizations and networks working in a variety of sectors across the relief to development continuum, through providing scientific data-based solutions to fuel responses to strengthen families in crisis. We collaborate with multilateral, bilateral, academic, and non-governmental organization partners across sectors through providing evidence to strengthen efforts to protect families in this new age of polycrisis.

We are not a provider, governmental agency, or non-governmental organisation. We are honoured to collaborate with such entities through providing evidence to strengthen populations in this new age of polycrisis. Our work has had significant impact in shaping a White House Memorandum (2021), a Vatican Decree (2021), and the Global COVID-19 Summit 2022. It has been noted by 2021-2023 CDC Director Dr Walensky, President Biden, and Michelle Obama, and it has provided data towards World Bank Trust Fund initiatives, the US National Academies of Science, Engineering, Medicine call for immediate action for children affected by COVID-19, and strategic advocacy for children affected by the HIV pandemic.

  • Science

    Data-to-Action

We use data science, statistics, and epidemiologic methods to estimate the magnitude of polycrisis impacts on children and rigorously evaluate response strategies. We publish in leading scientific journals, including The Lancet, Science, Nature Medicine, the JAMA Network, and Pediatrics.

  • Impact

    Prevent, Prepare, Protect

We develop, test, and prioritize evidence-based support for families and children which can be delivered in crisis settings worldwide. We partner with globally networked NGOs to deliver psychosocial, mental health, parenting, and prevention of violence against children programming in over 60 countries.

  • Advocacy

    Pathway to Sustainability

We engage stakeholders to collaborate for sustainable impact to protect children and build lasting resilience for families in crisis.
